Bad news-good news-maybe bad news! Bad news is that I wrote way more than expected so chapter 2 is not the end of the story. The good news is that I&#8217;ve already got 9000 words done on chapter 3! I plan to release that chapter Sunday evening. The possible bad news is that I may have to break it into chapter 3 AND chapter 4. If I do that, the final chapter 4 will be out by Tuesday. I think I just need about 2000 more words to finish the whole thing up so I&#8217;m 100% sure on the timelines here. Sorry!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Back in the cabin, all five friends poured their own drinks from a keg while music played through a nearby docked iPhone.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Okay, my turn!&#8221; Marty called out after taking a hit on his joint.\u00a0 &#8220;Dana!\u00a0 Truth or dare?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Oh god,&#8221; Dana said, blushing and shifting on the couch next to Jules.\u00a0 &#8220;Uhh.\u00a0 Dare.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yes!&#8221; Marty said, raising his arms and standing.\u00a0 &#8220;I dare you to make out with that moose over there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;M-moose?&#8221; Dana asked, looking around.\u00a0 &#8220;Marty.\u00a0 Are you talking about that wolf&#8217;s head?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Marty squinted at the mounted wolf&#8217;s head.\u00a0 &#8220;Well, whatever that glorious, mysterious beast is, then.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No, no way,&#8221; Dana said.\u00a0 &#8220;I&#8217;m changing to truth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Jules pushed at her friend.\u00a0 &#8220;Come onnnn, Dana, live a little.\u00a0 You always do this.\u00a0 Always wimping out at the last minute.\u00a0 Take a chance, girl.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I-&#8221; Dana paused.\u00a0 Jules was right.\u00a0 She was always taking the easy way out.\u00a0 The safest way.\u00a0 The young woman took a big pull from her beer.\u00a0 She was here to unwind and get away from who she was for a while.\u00a0 Screwing up her courage, she decided to just go for it.\u00a0 &#8220;Fuck it.\u00a0 Okay, then.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Standing, Dana faced the mounted head and walked toward it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Do it all sexy-like!&#8221; Curt called out behind her.<\/p>\n<p>Blushing, Dana stopped.\u00a0 She stared at the wolf&#8217;s head and then remembered the way Holden had looked shirtless.\u00a0 She was on her second large beer and the shame and anger of the professor&#8217;s email still hurt her.\u00a0 Again, she decided to just go with it.\u00a0 She glanced back at her friends, her eyes lingering on Holden for a moment.\u00a0 Turning, she <strong><em>slinked<\/em><\/strong> over to the mounted head.\u00a0 Her hips shook left and right and Curt whistled after her while Jules called out her own encouragement.<\/p>\n<p>Stopping in front of the wolf&#8217;s head, she cradled it with her arms, cocking her head to the side and then leaned forward drunkenly.\u00a0 She expected it to smell or feel ratty to the touch but was pleasantly surprised to find it soft and without any scent at all.\u00a0 She planted her lips on the thing&#8217;s open mouth and kissed it awkwardly.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No,&#8221; Marty said from behind.\u00a0 &#8220;I said <strong><em>make out <\/em><\/strong>with it!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Blushing, trying to ignore the cat calls and random, overly-exaggerated scenarios behind her, Dana closed her eyes and opened her mouth.\u00a0 Her tongue worked around the wolf&#8217;s open mouth while her fingers clenched into its fur.\u00a0 She felt its large neck, kneading the thick, soft fur, surprised to find herself slightly aroused at the sensual touch of it.\u00a0 She licked its black lips, her tongue circling its mouth and along its teeth.\u00a0 She wrapped her lips around the thing&#8217;s tongue and moaned, lightly.\u00a0 For show.\u00a0 Of course.\u00a0 She focused on everything other than what she was doing.\u00a0 She pictured the professor but then quickly thought of Holden instead.\u00a0 She could see his face and his smile and-<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ow!&#8221;\u00a0 Dana pulled back, touching her lip and tongue.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hey,&#8221; Holden said, standing up.\u00a0 &#8220;You okay?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yeah,&#8221; Dana answered.\u00a0 &#8220;Yeah.\u00a0 Just cut myself on it.\u00a0 More drunk than I thought, I guess.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Well, shit,&#8221; Marty said.\u00a0 &#8220;I give an a+ for that wonderful scene!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dana swallowed, tasting the blood in her mouth before touching her tongue gingerly again.\u00a0 She sat back next to Jules and told the other girl she was fine when asked.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Well, uhh, your turn, Dana,&#8221; Marty said, sitting back down.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Oh, right,&#8221; Dana said, standing.\u00a0 &#8220;Jules, truth or-&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A loud bang sounded from the middle of the living room, startling everyone.\u00a0 A large trapdoor stood open in the room and everyone stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What the hell is that?!&#8221; Jules asked.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The- the cellar door,&#8221; Dana answered nervously.<\/p>\n<p>Curt took the lead, walking over to it while everyone else watched.\u00a0 &#8220;Maybe the wind blew it open?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Uhh, how?&#8221; Marty asked.\u00a0 &#8220;We&#8217;re inside and there&#8217;s no wind.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>All five of them crowded around, staring at the old, plain steps that led down into darkness.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What do you think is down there?&#8221; Holden asked.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Why don&#8217;t we find out?&#8221; Jules said.\u00a0 &#8220;I still have my dare since I was going to pick that anyway.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll go down first.&#8221;\u00a0 Without waiting for anyone else, she stepped down into the cellar, her camera phone&#8217;s flash providing light.<\/p>\n<p>The room was filled with oddities.\u00a0 In the narrow light she saw old photos, creepy masks, strange tools and more.\u00a0 She turned and her light shined on a portrait of a young girl, making her cry out in sudden fear.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Jules!&#8221; Curt called, rushing down the stairs.\u00a0 &#8220;Are you alright?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m- I&#8217;m fine,&#8221; the\u00a0 young woman answered.\u00a0 &#8220;Just startled.\u00a0 Stupid painting.\u00a0 It&#8217;s nothing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Everyone else followed Curt down and they fanned out.\u00a0 Marty picked up an old oil lamp, lighting it with his lighter.\u00a0 Warm, mellow light filled the large room.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Oh my god,&#8221; Dana said.\u00a0 &#8220;Look at all of this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hey,&#8221; Marty said slowly.\u00a0 &#8220;I, uhh, don&#8217;t mean to be a wuss but I&#8217;m not getting a good feeling down here, guys.\u00a0 This doesn&#8217;t feel right.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Holden stood in front of an animatronic fortune telling machine.\u00a0 &#8220;Is this all your cousin&#8217;s stuff?\u00a0 Because, man, if so, he&#8217;s into some weird shit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No,&#8221; Curt said, looking around.\u00a0 &#8220;I don&#8217;t think this is his.\u00a0 The mirror people maybe.\u00a0 Or someone before that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dana touched a small dresser.\u00a0 &#8220;Some of this looks really old.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And beautiful,&#8221; Jules said wistfully, touching an old wedding dress.<\/p>\n<p>Curt held a conch shell in his hands, blowing the dirt off of it.\u00a0 He slowly brought it to his lips.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Maybe we should go back upstairs,&#8221; Marty said, touching Curt&#8217;s arm before he could blow into the shell.\u00a0 Curt shrugged his shoulders but put the shell down, suddenly fascinated by an ornate egg.\u00a0 &#8220;I, uhh, dare you all to go upstairs.\u00a0 Anyone?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Still standing in front of the dresser, Dana lifted a little notebook from the top of it.\u00a0 She handled it carefully due to its old age and then opened it while everyone else explored.\u00a0 Jules lifted an old amulet from the wedding dress, slowly bringing it up to put around her neck.\u00a0 Curt held the egg, twisting and turning the shell of it, trying to unlock its secrets.\u00a0 Holden turned the handle to a music box while Marty looked at old film.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Guys,&#8221; Dana said.\u00a0 &#8220;Listen to this.\u00a0 I found a diary, I think.\u00a0 &#8216;April fourth.\u00a0 Father was cross with me and said I lacked the true faith.\u00a0 I wish I could prove my devotion as Judah and Matthew proved on those travelers.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Wait,&#8221; Jules said, putting the amulet back.\u00a0 &#8220;What is that?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;&#8216;Diary of Anna Patience Buckner, 1903&#8217;, it says,&#8221;\u00a0 Dana continued, picking a later entry.\u00a0 &#8220;&#8216;Mama screamed most of the night.\u00a0 I prayed that she might find faith but she only stopped when Papa cut her belly and stuffed the coals in.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Jesus Christ,&#8221; Holden said quietly.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;&#8216;Judah told me in my dream&#8217;,&#8221; Dana read, again picking a different page.\u00a0 &#8220;&#8216;That Matthew took him to the black room, so I know he is killed.\u00a0 I want to understand the glory of the pain like Matthew but cutting the flesh makes him have a&#8230; husband&#8217;s bulge and I do not get like that.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What the fuck,&#8221; Marty exclaimed.\u00a0 &#8220;Can we not do this?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No,&#8221; Curt told her.\u00a0 &#8220;Go on.\u00a0 I want to know what happens.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;&#8216;I have found it.\u00a0 In the oldest books, the way of saving our family.\u00a0 My good arm is hacked up and et so I hope this will be readable.\u00a0 That a believer will come and speak this to our spirits.\u00a0 Then we will be restored and the great pain will return.&#8217;\u00a0 And there&#8217;s something written in Latin.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Okay,&#8221; Marty said anxiously.\u00a0 &#8220;Okay.\u00a0 I&#8217;m drawing a fucking line here.\u00a0 Do not read the Latin.\u00a0 This never fucking ends well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I- wait did you guys hear that?&#8221;\u00a0 Dana said, looking around anxiously.\u00a0 Her ears strained, twitching for what she swore was a voice.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No,&#8221; Marty said.\u00a0 &#8220;No, I did not and I don&#8217;t want to know.\u00a0 Guys, can we-&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Stop being a fucking baby, Marty,&#8221; Curt said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Curt!&#8221; Jules yelled.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a diary,&#8221; Curt said.\u00a0 &#8220;It doesn&#8217;t mean anything.\u00a0 Keep going, Dana.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What?&#8221; Dana said, looking around.\u00a0 Her left ear twitched slightly.\u00a0 &#8220;Oh.\u00a0 Oh, right.\u00a0 Uh.\u00a0 Dolor supervivo caro.\u00a0 Dolor sublimis caro.\u00a0 Dolor ignio annivos.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s done it, we have a winner!&#8221;\u00a0 Sitterson called out.\u00a0 &#8220;It&#8217;s the Buckners, ladies and gentlemen!\u00a0 All right, that means&#8230; looks like congratulations go to Maintenance!\u00a0 Control, release the family!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Wait, wait!&#8221;\u00a0 a voice called out.\u00a0 &#8220;Wait a minute!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sitterson looked around, frowning.\u00a0 &#8220;We&#8217;re on a tight schedule here.\u00a0 What&#8217;s the problem?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>An older woman, graying hair held in a bun, stepped through the crowd.\u00a0 &#8220;No, Finance won.\u00a0 We won this one.\u00a0 Final-fucking-ly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Clarice,&#8221; Sitterson said gently, glancing at the large red digital clock over the various monitors.\u00a0 &#8220;Look, they read the diary.\u00a0 She spoke the words.\u00a0 Latin!\u00a0 Nobody fucks with Latin but she read the words.\u00a0 It&#8217;s done.\u00a0 It&#8217;s the Buckners.\u00a0 Control!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No,&#8221; Clarice said firmly. \u00a0&#8220;Roll back five minutes on the monitor.\u00a0 Come on, Sitterson, don&#8217;t be a prick.\u00a0 Just do it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The older man frowned at the woman but then threw his hands up.\u00a0 &#8220;Fine!\u00a0 I know you&#8217;d bitch and bitch about this if we didn&#8217;t.\u00a0 Fine.\u00a0 Control, go back five minutes on the feed.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s see-\u00a0 Oh.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yes,&#8221; Clarice said primly.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Oh.\u00a0 I forgot all about that damn thing.\u00a0 Since it wasn&#8217;t in the cellar anymore I&#8217;d completely forgotten about it.\u00a0 Okay, Finance for the big &#8216;W&#8217;, then.\u00a0 Open their pens.\u00a0 Let &#8217;em out, Control.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s see if Chem did their jobs right this year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Jules stood in front of the fireplace.\u00a0 The heat from it warmed her but, it was more than that.\u00a0 Ever since she&#8217;d arrived at the cabin, she&#8217;d felt&#8230; not off.\u00a0 Not that.\u00a0 Different.\u00a0 She couldn&#8217;t &#8211; there was a word for it but she couldn&#8217;t think of it.\u00a0 Distracted?\u00a0 Maybe that?\u00a0 And hot.\u00a0 Not because of the fireplace.\u00a0 Not because of that.\u00a0 But, because she just was.\u00a0 She was always mostly humble about it but sometimes&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>The young woman dragged a fingertip down her lips, along her throat and into her open shirt, feeling the swell of her breast.\u00a0 She felt so good.\u00a0 Free.\u00a0 Free-er.\u00a0 She wondered if that was a word but, just briefly.\u00a0 A small, simple laugh escaped her curved lips.\u00a0 Maybe <strong><em>she<\/em><\/strong> should seduce her profess&#8230; pro&#8230; her teacher.\u00a0 With all his big words and talk about medicine.\u00a0 She shook her blonde hair, unaware of the chemicals she&#8217;d absorbed from the special coloring.\u00a0 Unaware of what it&#8217;d slowly been doing to her.\u00a0 Freeing her mind.<\/p>\n<p>Gyrating, rotating her hips, spreading her long, slim legs, Jules danced.\u00a0 Rocking and working her body, turning to face her friends and smiling because she <strong><em>knew<\/em><\/strong> they wanted her.\u00a0 They knew how pretty she was.\u00a0 She knew it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Fuck yeah, baby!&#8221; Curt said, tipping back yet another glass of beer.\u00a0 He&#8217;d lost count of how many he&#8217;d had.\u00a0 &#8220;Fuck yeah.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jules made her way over to Holden, giving him a small, private little dance before bouncing away, back to the fireplace.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Classy,&#8221; Marty mumbled in a daze.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Too fucking right it is,&#8221; Curt yelled, finishing his drink.\u00a0 &#8220;Come on, man, you know you&#8217;d take a piece of that ass.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Pieces,&#8221; Marty said.\u00a0 &#8220;Fucking pieces.\u00a0 Can we not talk about people in pieces any more tonight?\u00a0 Was nobody else freaked out about that fucking diary?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was,&#8221; Holden said, glancing at Jules.\u00a0 Every so often she would move just enough to show off the bottom of an ass cheek.\u00a0 It was hard to resist looking.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yeah, I kind of was, too,&#8221; Dana said.\u00a0 The young woman tilted her head, eyes far away as she seemed to stare into the distance.\u00a0 A bead of sweat rolled down her cheek.\u00a0 &#8220;I think the fireplace is too hot.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mmm,&#8221; Jules moaned lightly, making her way over to Marty.\u00a0 &#8220;Speaking of too hot&#8230; Is someone feeling left out?\u00a0 Remember when we were freshmen?\u00a0 We were sweethearts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We only ever made out once and that was before Curt moved into town.\u00a0 I never bought that ring I said I&#8217;d give you and you never had eyes for anyone else ever since he showed up anyway.&#8221;\u00a0 Jules swiveled, shaking her slim ass in front of Marty&#8217;s face, back and forth while he talked.\u00a0 &#8220;I was thinking&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Oh, no,&#8221; Curt said.\u00a0 &#8220;No fucking way.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not drunk enough to listen to theories from Junior Tommy Chong.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s go, baby.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll leave Holden to his job and Marty can explain his nerdy bullshit whatever to both of them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dana wrinkled her nose, sniffing after Jules as she passed.\u00a0 She thought she smelled something as the other woman passed.\u00a0 Something off.\u00a0 Not natural.\u00a0 Her lip curled and she tipped her head, sniffing again.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hey, Jules,&#8221; Dana said.\u00a0 &#8220;You sure you feeling okay?\u00a0 Maybe you should lie down.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ah, that&#8217;s exactly what we&#8217;re gonna do,&#8221; Curt said.\u00a0 Jules giggled as her boyfriend led her away and through the front door.\u00a0 &#8220;Both of us.\u00a0 Vigo&#8230; vig&#8230; roughly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dana followed after them, watching them go, happy to be away from the roaring fireplace.\u00a0 The heat from it was too much and yet, standing by the open front door, she didn&#8217;t feel any cooler.\u00a0 She closed the door slowly as the young couple made their way into the woods.\u00a0 The cold night air brought the scent of the lake, rotting leaves and something familiar.\u00a0 Newly familiar.\u00a0 However that was possible.\u00a0 Something exciting and raw and fresh that made her teeth grind and-<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hey, so,&#8221; Marty said, interrupting her thoughts.\u00a0 &#8220;Nobody else really thinks anything weird is going on?\u00a0 Nobody thinks people are acting a little off?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No,&#8221; Dana said, too quickly.\u00a0 &#8220;I don&#8217;t think anything is wrong.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Jules is acting like a&#8230; a&#8230; hussy,&#8221; Marty continued.\u00a0 &#8220;And Curt &#8211; Curt is pulling some alpha male bullshit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s just drunk,&#8221; Dana said carefully.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No,&#8221; Marty said.\u00a0 &#8220;No.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve seen him drunk.\u00a0 And, and he&#8217;s a sociology major on a full academic scholarship and now he&#8217;s trying to whore his girlfriend out and he&#8217;s calling his friend a nerd?\u00a0 And-&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And?&#8221; Dana asked nervously, clenching her fist.\u00a0 She could feel her nails digging into her palms.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And,&#8221; Marty continued.\u00a0 &#8220;I&#8217;m&#8230; I&#8217;m hungry.\u00a0 Do we have any food?\u00a0 Chips or something?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dana let out a long breath.\u00a0 &#8220;You&#8217;re high, Marty.\u00a0 I love you but you&#8217;re so fucking high right now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m,&#8221; Marty said, squinting at her briefly.\u00a0 &#8220;Okay.\u00a0 Yeah.\u00a0 But.\u00a0 The point stands.\u00a0 We&#8217;re all wrong.\u00a0 Something&#8217;s wrong.\u00a0 And nobody else is noticing it or saying anything about it.\u00a0 So.\u00a0 So, yeah.\u00a0 I&#8217;m.\u00a0 Going to go look at picture books.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dana found herself breathing easier once Marty left to his room.\u00a0 The stench of him and his joints threatened to make her vomit.\u00a0 She didn&#8217;t even know how she could smell anything beyond that as the smell of him seemed to permeate the entire cabin.\u00a0 Not as strong as <strong><em>that<\/em><\/strong> smell, though.\u00a0 Whatever it was.\u00a0 Moving. Shifting.\u00a0 In the distance but coming closer.\u00a0 Ever closer.\u00a0 Making her blood pound.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hey,&#8221; Holden said.\u00a0 Dana snapped around to look at the man, the small hairs along her arms standing at end.\u00a0 She&#8217;d somehow forgotten about him.\u00a0 He was standing by the keg.\u00a0 &#8220;Do you want another drink?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Y- yeah,&#8221; she told him.\u00a0 &#8220;Yeah, sure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Holden filled Dana&#8217;s mug near to the top and brought it to her.\u00a0 She sat at her end of the couch while he sat opposite side.\u00a0 Mug in hand, he picked up the diary Dana had read downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;&#8216;The pain outlives the flesh&#8217;,&#8221; Holden read.\u00a0 &#8220;&#8216;The flesh returns&#8217; or maybe &#8216;has a meeting place&#8217;?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Is that somewhere in the diary,&#8221; Dana asked.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No,&#8221;
